Thanks to Fran, the gallery and those who helped organize today’s reading. Was lovely to be surrounded by art for a reading – the photographs of the tattoo art on display were quite phenomenal. Brilliant work from Nomi Chi, Joel Rich and others. Great to read alongside JD Morden and Timothy Shay – and I appreciated the chance to write towards the art. A task, to be sure, but good to be challenged and dragged out of the comfort zone. Whatever that is.
This coming Sunday at 2pm, I’m reading at an interesting event in Deep Cove, North Vancouver. Tattoos! Poems! Shouting! It’ll be fun. If you’re in the neighbourhood, come check it out.
On May 1st, Storm Crow Tavern on Commercial drive will host “Spoken Nerd”! Details:
“Calling all poets of the nerd-like persuasion. This is your night to explain to the world your love of isotopes or Harry Potter or Star Trek or Dr. Who or Werewolves/Vampires/Ducks or Suduko or Quantum Physics or Comic Books or Grammar or anything you feel nerdy and obsessive about.
Costumes are welcomed whether you are in the audience or performing. COSPLAY. Dress up!
We’ve wanted to stage this event at Storm Crow Tavern – Vancouver’s Premier Nerd Pub for a long time – and now it’s finally happening!
Hosted by Duncan Shields.
Poet sign-up 1:30–2pm. Open to the general public. This event is All Ages. Minors are allowed in the tavern in the afternoon.

A great opportunity for writers in BC aged 50 and over!
“The Cedric Literary Awards have been created specifically to recognize and celebrate unpublished BC writers of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry, and First Nations storytellers. We want to play a key role in: encouraging unpublished writers who may not have considered publishing their work previously; providing a forum for previously unpublished work by BC writers and storytellers; and celebrating their achievements. We believe that writers aged 50 and over have had a lifetime of experience to share in writing[.]”
Two good events coming up in the next bit worth getting to:
a) RC Weslowski and crew host the Vancouver Youth Poetry Slam Finals! This showcases the talent of young writers in the city as they select a finalist to send to Ottawa for the nationals. Tix will be $8 for 18 and under and $10 for 19 and up. Money raised helps to fund the youth teams travel to Ottawa.

b) Thor Polukoshko and the Langara English Dept bring another night of readers, this time geared towards new readers and writers from Langara. At the Railway Club as usual – I read at this series previously, and it’s a great time.
No cover charge at the door!
